How annoying is it when you ask someone "When is the best time to go to [some country]?" because you're trying to make fun travel plans and they say "It's always great there!" You know that's not true so, you move to the next reliable resource to begin the process of elimination.
It's kinda like what you're hearing in the news right now as the USA is staring a presidential election in the face in just a couple days. Each candidate is incessantly telling you they are always great and the others - not so great. In so many kind and respectful words.
Admittedly, I might be just a tad bit guilty about Morrillo always being great well, because it actually is! Dang, there I go again but really, let's look at it from a surfers perspective. If you're a surfer and someone tells you the surf is always great in one area, sound the alarms cuz the "BS" detector goes straight to red that is, unless you've experienced Morrillo. Morrillo is known for being the most reliable surf in Panama.
I don't know about the rest of the world but I'd put it out there for debate. Kicker is, you'll have to experience it first or, just take our word for it. I could get all into the bathymetry of our ocean floor, where our swells come from, the wind cycles, and swell consistency but, I've already done that so no need to make this story any longer when you could just go back to that other story.
Let's talk some numbers real quick. Nobody does numbers better than baseball. They have so many statistics, it's impossible for someone like me to track but it's purely euphoric for arithromaniacs. But, you don't need to be one of those to have heard about the 3,00 hit club - it's one of the most exclusive clubs in baseball. So much so that there are only 33 MLB players that have ever achieved that many hits or more in their career. The NFL has a 3,000 yard passes per year club which includes my favorite - Brett Favre. What about waves caught in a single year? To date, there isn't a 3,000 waves caught in a year club so Ryan may just have to start a new one! As of October 28, he caught 3,000 waves here this year!
You're doing the math in your head right? What does it take to catch 3,000 waves and why would you do that (count them, that is)? Ryan is not what I would consider an arithmomaniac nor is he the kind of guy who is trying to prove to everyone he can catch a lot of waves because if you go surfing with him, that's obvious. Instead, his motivation came from chatting with our guests over the years. Living just a few steps to the surf, it's very convenient to surf just about every day and so our guests have asked him many times how many waves does he think he gets per year?
Not knowing for sure, he figured on average he surfs about 5 days a week catching on average 10+ waves each time so, about 3,000 per year which people just didn't believe him so, he figured he better find out to be able to back that statistic up. To do that, he bought a fancy surf watch that does all the math for you and the challenge was on. As of October 28th he caught his 3,000th wave this year during 172 days of surfing. So yeah, that was an awesome day.
The point of all this was not only fun, a great goal to challenge himself to reach, and to be able to provide the proof to our guests, but also to prove just how reliable the surf really is here in Morrillo. We have guests that surf 3 times a day. Now do that math. How many waves could they get if they lived here? All I can imagine is how amazing their bodies would be!
So, are you still wondering when is the best time to surf is here? The thing is, it changes but we always have waves. January is the month that many consider the height of the season which is our Summer here. This is the time of year when the off shore trade winds kick in standing up the waves making them steep, fast, longer rides, with great shape. The water is warm, the air is hot, the sun is shining and you're not likely to see a drop of rain. For many of our guests, this sounds like absolute perfection or - paradise, but I remain steadfast in my response - it's always great here. Would I lie to you?
Though New Year's Eve may be sold out, we still have availability in January if you want to start your year off trying to make the new 3,000 waves per year club! It's a worthy goal, I promise and the caveat to make it into this prestigious club is you have to start your count in Morrillo.
